Flinders Ranges National Park
The Flinders Ranges located in the Outback of South Australia, is known for its rugged gorges and mountain ranges which are located in the stunning red dirt dessert. The ranges are world renowned for their geological sights and aboriginal rock art sights. Since European settlement there have been alot of impressive fossil findings which have put the Flinders Ranges on the world map.
The Adnyamathanha people, the local Indigenous Australians who first called this land home have inhabited these ranges for tens of thousands of years. To these people the Flinders Rangers still have great spiritual meaning, with many of their dream time stories coming from these ranges. They believe the physical features of the ranges have spiritual meaning.
Located 450 kilometers north of Adelaide, which is the capital of South Australia. The Flinders Ranges are 95,000 hectares in area. Offering a range of accommodation options including on sight camping, camping at the National Park is a fantastic idea. Here you can have a proper holiday on the parks grounds and are able to explore the entire park and enjoy all it had to offer.
There are many attractions that bring tourists to the Flinders Ranges, not just the size and remoteness of this area or the cultural significance. The wildlife and flora that call this area home are exquisite. Alot of the vegetation found in the park has been growing there for thousands of years, most of these plant species do not grow anywhere else in the world.
The wildlife in this area include alot of the dessert mammals including the Red Kangaroo, Western Grey Kangaroo and the Euro. These three species where once decreasing in numbers due to the local Dingoes, in recent times the park has removed the Dingoes from its grounds and numbers in the endangered species are now thriving.
When visiting the Ranges there are also a number of bird and reptile life to take notice of. Including the striking Wedge Tailed Eagle, as well as a number of Emu's, Australian Ringneck Parrots, Pink and Grey Gallahs, Rainbow Bee-eater, Elegant Parrots and Red-capped Robins. The reptile life strives equally as well here. Reptiles found in this area include the Water Snake, Geckoes, Sleepy Lizards, Gidgee Skink, Legless Lizards, Frogs and Goannas.
Visitors Centres are available at the park, the tour guides here will help to teach you about the ecosystem, plants, wildlife, history and culture of the park. There are many Bush Walking tracks and Four Wheel Drive Vehicle Tours to help you explore the park. If you are lucky there are also scenic flights over the Flinders Ranges, this is the one way to truly grasp the size and beauty of this amazing park.
The Flinders Ranges National Park is open all year round although it is best experienced during Winter, Autumn and Spring as this area can get quite hot during Summer. There is so much to see in the Flinders Ranges, it is best to come and experience it for yourself.
